Sub-contractor Pay Trends May 2010

Hudson Contract delivers the most accurate indications of pay trends across the construction industry, using payroll data for over 1,300 construction companies and 70,000 plus subbies to publish the average pay for the full spectrum of 17 different trades across five regions.

Finally, it has arrived – the first concrete signal that the construction industry could be emerging from recession. For the first time in ten months, our five regions are ALL showing an increase in average pay rates, with the northern regions leading the way.

Comments Hudson Contract Managing Director David Jackson: “A further sign of recovery is that there has been an upward lift in over 80% of the trade groups we monitor. And it is not solely a case of the new financial year bringing a new pot of money. While new budgets coming into play means work is picking up, our clients also report that jobs priced before Christmas are coming to fruition.”

This month’s figures also highlight a disparity in certain trades from one region to another.

For example:

  • Joiners in the South West are averaging £351.69 a week, while their counterparts in the South East earn more than double that amount – at £781.27
  • Roofers in the Midlands are poor neighbours compared to those in North West with average earnings of £389.93 and £676.05 respectively
  • Compared to this time last year, joiners are earning more – but roofers’ earnings are down

David Jackson adds: “It’s only prudent to err on the side of caution, but it would be good to think we are over the worst of the downturn. Another point to bear in mind is that most of our operatives are on measured rates of pay and many are able to work longer working hours now the clocks have gone forward – although having said that, the work has to be there in the first place.”

Hudson Contract reaches a new landmark with HMRC

Last month, the number of self-employed labour only operatives engaged through Hudson Contract and accepted by HMRC soared above the 70,000 mark – and continues to grow on a daily basis.

In the past twelve months the number of operatives paid each week has also risen by over 30 per cent.

“It means our pay stats carry even greater authority, due to the ever-increasing number of operatives whose earnings we are able to monitor,” says David Jackson. “We are proud to be in a position to help clients survive – and even prosper – during these tough times by offering them a legitimate, self-employment solution that saves money and eliminates risk.”

Hudson Contract’s ‘window on the construction industry’ gives you hard figures and data that is not available from any other source, with pay averages that reflect the amounts paid by a sample number of businesses – large and small – to specific trades over the twelve weeks to 30th April 2010.www.hudsoncontract.co.uk
