The number of starts was 23,410 in the September quarter of 2011. Although 1% lower than in the June quarter the figure was 62% above the trough in the March quarter of 2009. The value was 51% below the December quarter 2005 peak.
Housing completions in England (seasonally adjusted) also decreased this quarter, down 4% from 27,330 in June quarter 2011 to 26,190 in the September quarter. This compares to a 5% fall between the March 2011 and the June 2011 quarters.
Annual housing starts reached 96,070 in the 12 months to September 2011, down by 7% compared with the 12 months to September 2010. Annual housing completions in England totalled 106,000 in the 12 months to September 2011, down by 2% compared with the 12 months to September 2010.
Private enterprise housing starts (seasonally adjusted) were 4% above the June quarter 2011. Starts by housing associations were down however, 13% lower than the previous quarter.
Private enterprise housing completions (seasonally adjusted) were 1% lower in the September 2011 quarter than in the June 2011 quarter. Completions by housing associations decreased by 10% between the June quarter 2011 and September quarter 2011.
