Buro Happold designs $180m Nebraskan basketball arena

30 Aug 11 Construction is set to start of a new US basketball arena designed by Buro Happold.

Buro Happold is providing structural engineering services for the US$180m (£110m) new home of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s basketball teams.

Construction will begin in September of the West Haymarket Arena, which will have 16,500-seats and capacity for future expansion.

Buro Happold has used the Building Information Modelling (BIM) software package Revit to develop the structural design for the complex building and site. Structural engineer Erleen Hatfield, project principal for Buro Happold said:  “In fact, the entire multidisciplinary team used BIM and the three-dimensional models enhanced communication and coordination. These benefits will be passed on to the contractor, who will utilise the BIM model to assist in construction.”

Using BIM technology enabled Buro Happold to develop the structural solutions required to build the project in two consecutive parts. This was necessary because the site is located on top of two railway tracks that won’t be fully removed for a year, despite construction beginning in September.

The first part of the building is a concrete structure that encloses the basketball court and the seating areas. This structure will be shoehorned into the land between the two tracks so construction can start while the site is being cleared. The second part of the project is the façade, which has a steel structure that wraps around the arena. Construction will begin on the shell once the tracks have been taken out.

Architect for the scheme is DLR Group and the mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineer is ME Group.
