£350m Cwmbran hospital secures funding

1 Nov 16 Welsh Assembly health secretary Vaughan Gething has approved £350m in funding for new Specialist and Critical Care Centre (SCCC) in Cwmbran, Gwent.

However, the final tender costs are still to be agreed.

Laing O’Rourke has been delivering enabling works at the hospital site under a preconstruction agreement. The architect for the new-build scheme is BDP.

The SCCC will be built on land around the existing Llanfrechfa Grange Hospital site, near Cwmbran. It will have around 460 beds, will deal with all major emergencies, and will have a broad range of diagnostic services, operating theatres, and a consultant-led obstetric unit. There will also be a helipad on the site.

Gething said: “I know there has been a high level of public and political interest in this project and after careful consideration I’m delighted to have approved the full business case for the SCCC. I will now release capital funding from 2016/17 to 2021/22 to build what will be a state of the art hospital in Gwent.”

The hospital is expected to open in 2022.
