Agreement signed for €8.5bn French-Italian rail link

The agreement has been signed between France and Italy for an €8.5bn (£7.1bn) rail link between Lyon and Turin.

Ministers from the two countries met in Rome for the signing of an amendment to an agreement originally signed in 2001.

The amendment defines the conditions for carrying out the project. It specifies the elements necessary for the completion of the project including its final route, which takes account of developments on the Italian side to improve its integration.

The first phase is for a 57km tunnel between the stations of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne in France and Susa in Italy.
