Alstom and Bouygues sign €450m Manila metro contract

12 Feb 16 A team of Alstom and Bouygues Travaux Publics has signed a contract with Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) for an upgrade to the Manila metro system in the Philippines.

The contract for the upgrading and extension of Light Rail Transit Line 1 is worth about €450m (£350). The extended line is scheduled to enter into commercial service in 2020.

Manila has 16 million inhabitants but only three metro lines and so action is needed to alleviate congestion and reduce travel times for commuters. In 20 years, the LRT-1 line - which serves 20 stations along its 20km route - has experienced an increase of its daily ridership from over 400,000 to 500,000 today. The extension will add 12km and 8 stations. Once the extension completed, the LRT-line 1 will carry about 800,000 passengers per day.

Alstom will provide an integrated metro solution which includes the signalling and communication system, traction power supply and track work on the 12km extended line including a new depot and the extension of the existing depot. Alstom will also equip 60 trains with its Atlas 100 on-board signalling system and revamp the signalling for the existing 20km line.
