Atkins team picked for West Point treatment plant

11 Jan 16 A joint venture of Atkins and O’Brien & Gere has won a contract for a US$70m (£48m) wastewater treatment plant at the US Military Academy at West Point, New York.

The US Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) is the client for the contract, which will replace a plant built in 1956 and last upgraded in 1972.

Atkins-OBG will provide a suite of design, engineering, permitting and project management services. Atkins will serve as managing partner of the joint venture, responsible for integrated project management along with detailed site, utilities and building project components, from planning through commissioning.

The new plant will be designed to increase capacity to more than two million gallons per day to meet current and projected future needs. Additional features will include installation of closed-circuit television and energy monitoring and control systems.

The project is a designated pilot installation for the US Army’s ‘Net Zero’ sustainability initiative and so energy recovery and generation will be prioritised in the project’s design. All energy consumed in operating the new WWTP will be partially offset by the use of alternative energy systems.
