August saw 45% jump in new work

5 Sep 14 There was a 45% increase in the value of construction contracts awarded in August 2014 compared to August 2013.

According to data gathered by The Builders’ Conference, there were 781 construction contracts awarded last month, with a combined total of £3.899bn. In August 2013, by comparison, there were 533 contracts awarded with a total value of £2.64bn.

The biggest single construction award last month was a £120m contract to refurbish and repair the North Yorkshire section of the A1, which went to a Morgan Sindall/Carillion joint venture.

The total value of contracts awards for rolling year to date, for the 12 months to 31st August 2014, topped £41.7bn, Builders’ Conference records show.

Over the past 12 months, Balfour Beatty has won more UK work, by value, than any other contractor, with £1,958.3m. This is the total value of the 165 contracts it has signed.

In second place by value, but first by number of contracts, is Morgan Sindall, whose 255 contracts won in the past 12 months are together worth £1,397.2m.

Carillion, Galliford Try, Kier and BAM have also all signed more than £1bn-worth of new business in the past 12 months.
