Bad timing for Lineker’s crisp advert

24 Feb 15 On the evening after the inquest opened into the death of a Crossrail worker killed by a tonne of wet concrete, a poorly timed Walkers Crisps advert on prime time TV sought to make humour from the topic.

The Walkers Crisps advert showed ex-footballer Gary Lineker being covered in wet concrete dumped from a great height because he refuses to share his bag of crisps.

It was aired in a commercial break during ITV1’s flagship Monday night drama, Broadchurch. It is available to view on YouTube, here (link opens in new window).

Anyone aware with events earlier in the day at St Pancras Coroner's Court might have been shocked at the timing of this advertisement and struggled to see much humour in it.

For that very day, the inquest into the late René Tkacik had just started. It heard how he had been killed on 7th March 2014 by a tonne of wet concrete landing on him during shotcreting at Crossrail’s Fisher Street site under Holborn.

The inquest heard that he was an experienced construction worker but had limited grasp of English and might not have fully understood the safety briefings.
