Balfour Beatty lands Australian rail contract

20 Mar 12 Balfour Beatty Rail has won a contract for the overhead catenary system on the Gold Coast Rapid Transit project in Queensland, Australia.

The contract for Bombardier Transportation Australia covers the design, procurement, construction and commissioning of the system and is worth approximately AU$14m (£9.4m) to Balfour Beatty Rail.

The design work is to be undertaken by Balfour Beatty’s professional services division Parsons Brinckerhoff. The scope of work also covers the procurement, construction, testing and commissioning of 13km of overhead caternary system for the first stage of the project between Gold Coast University Hospital and Broadbeach South.

The Gold Coast Rapid Transit Project is part of an 18 year Public Private Partnership (PPP) contract between the Queensland State Government and GoldLinQ, which includes McConnell Dowell Constructors, Bombardier Transportation Australia and KDR Gold Coast. As operator franchisee of the first stage of the Gold Coast light system, GoldLinQ is responsible for the design, construction, operations and maintenance.

Balfour Beatty Rail’s international and major projects director Tiziano Moroni said: “We are delighted to contribute to the development of a modern and efficient transport system on the Gold Coast – a system which we believe will help to transform the way people use public transport in the area. This contract award adds further credibility to our reputation as a supplier of choice. It will help us establish a stronger presence in South-East Queensland while giving us the opportunity to strengthen our relationship with Bombardier.”

Construction will begin in November 2012 and the project is expected to be completed and operational by 2014.
