The project includes the design and construction of a 65,000 sq ft building housing a new cafeteria, bookstore and stockroom to serve the entire Mesa College campus in California.

The building, which is designed by SGPA/Miller Hull, will be equipped with multiple food stations focused on exhibition cooking. The culinary arts programme will include classrooms, a cooking laboratory, a demonstration kitchen, a rooftop vegetable garden and a student-operated restaurant. An open and flexible plan is being developed for the bookstore to accommodate current and future technologies. The reprographics area is being designed to accommodate campus mail and reprographics services for campus staff.

The project will incorporate a significant number of sustainable features and is expected to obtain LEED Gold certification from the US Green Building Council. Construction is scheduled to begin in February 2014 with an estimated completion in July 2015.

“We are delighted to expand our relationship with the San Diego Community College District and San Diego Mesa College,” said Brian Cahill, president of Balfour Beatty Construction in the southwest. “We are looking forward to implementing a lean, integrated form of project delivery and promoting a collaborate environment to ensure the project’s vision and goals are achieved.”

Balfour Beatty Construction is also providing design-build services to construct a new 25,867 sq ft fitness centre on campus which is expected to complete in June 2015.
