Balfour Beatty's new piling rig digs deeper

27 Jan 14 Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering (BBGE) can now drill deeper and wider than before after investing in a new high-tech piling rig.

The Bauer BG30 weighs in at 106 tonnes and can install piles to a depth of 64m and to a maximum diameter of 2.4m. It cost Balfour Beatty £1.15m.

One of the rig’s key advantages is its electronic instead of hydraulic systems, enhancing the control that can be achieved during delicate operations. Onboard telemetrics can also be monitored remotely on an iPad or similar handheld device, with the detailed data ensuring that piles can be installed with a greater degree of accuracy than before.

Not only does the rig have fewer noxious emissions than Balfour Beatty’s older rigs, since it complies with latest European regulations, it is also up to 6dB quieter thanks to a special coating has been applied to key engine parts.

Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering operations director Mark Ingram said: “This new rig allows us to drill bigger and deeper then we have before and is also quieter, quicker and more capable than standard rigs. This investment represents our commitment to ensuring we remain capable of delivering the complex and technically challenging foundations that our customers expect from us.”
