Balfour Beatty to build £12m substation for Dong's Welsh windfarm

4 Mar 15 Balfour Beatty has landed a £12m contract to develop an onshore substation to facilitate the transfer of electricity from Dong Energy’s Burbo Bank Extension wind farm in North Wales to the National Grid.

Balfour Beatty will build a substation at Bodelwyddan, south of the St Asaph Business Park in Denbighshire, where it will receive electricity from an 11km cable running inland from Rhyl. As previously reported, VolkerInfra has the cable installation contract.

The Burbo Bank Extension Offshore Wind Farm is located 8km off the UK coast in Liverpool Bay and is capable of generating up to 258MW of clean energy to power approximately 180,000 homes.

Balfour Beatty starts on site this month and is scheduled to complete works in the summer of 2016.

The substation will measure approximately 120 metres by 75 metres. The scheme includes the construction of buildings and compounds, the installation of low voltage electricity equipment, low voltage cables, communication cables, roads, paths, drainage and landscaping, and the facilitation and supervision of the installation of high voltage components and cabling.

Balfour Beatty’s regional construction business will deliver the structures and external works with Balfour Beatty Engineering Services providing the mechanical and electrical package.

Balfour Beatty regional managing director Peter Commins said: “This scheme allows Balfour Beatty to work across a wide range of our capabilities from civil engineering and construction through to mechanical and electrical works.”

The contractor has already placed almost £4m of orders for this project with local businesses in Denbighshire and Conwy, he said.

Dong Energy programme director Klaus Skoust Møller said: “Dong Energy is committed to investing in the UK so we're delighted to work with a UK-based company that has a high degree of expertise and capabilities in North Wales, and has delivered well for us in the past.

“Balfour Beatty also has a real focus on safety, which is incredibly important for us. This is the first construction activity to kick off the Burbo Bank Extension project, which will provide power to around 180,000 UK households.”
