BAM lands €346m Kiel Canal deal

16 Apr 14 BAM has won a €346m (£286m) contract to build a fifth lock a Brunsbüttel on the Kiel Canal in Germany.

Work will take seven years and be carried out by a joint venture formed by the BAM operating companies Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau, BAM Civiel and Wayss & Freytag Spezialtiefbau.  

The project includes the construction of a 360m-long sea lock between the Elbe and the Kiel Canal and alterations to the harbour entrance on the Elbe side. The construction of the fifth lock is needed for essential restoration work to the century-old lock complex at Brunsbüttel. It is also designed to ensure also smooth navigation on the busy Kiel Canal.

The contract has been awarded by the public authority responsible for management, maintenance and operation of the canal, the Wasser- und Schifffahrtsamt Brunsbüttel.
