BAM starts on Salford school

18 Feb 14 BAM Construction has started work on a new £10.4m university technical college (UTC) in Salford.

As it is in the vicinity of television studios, the school is being called ‘UTC@MediaCityUK’. It will specialise in subjects intended to prepare 14-19 year olds for careers in creative and digital industries. The 6,200m2 building will have TV and radio studios, as well as interactive media and gaming facilities. Traditional subjects such as English, maths, science, history, geography and languages will also be taught to GCSE, A Level and BTEC qualifications.

The four-storey college building has been designed by IBI Taylor Young to complement the architectural style of the surrounding MediaCityUK development.

BAM’s design and build team includes structural engineer Curtins, building services consultant Ramboll, landscape architect Planit IE, interior designer Space Zero, architect IBI Taylor Young and the technical adviser is Mott MacDonald.

BAM Construction project manager Jim Rooney said: “We have been looking forward to getting on site with this project and delivering this impressive purpose-built college to develop Manchester’s young creative and media professionals of the future.”
