BAM wins Berlin ‘House of the Future’ PPP

2 Dec 14 BAM has won the €58m (£46m) contract for the ‘House of the Future’ exhibition centre in Berlin.

The public-private partnership project will be delivered by BAM’s German building company BAM Deutschland and its facility management subsidiary BAM Immobilien-Dienstleistungen. It includes the development, construction and subsequent maintenance and operation for a period of 28 years.

‘Das Haus der Zukunft’  - House of the Future - is located along the River Spree next to the Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), which was recently completed by BAM Deutschland. The building will have approximately 8,000m² of floor space for exhibitions and events, with a focus on motivating people of all ages to delve into scientific research and future-related issues.

The starting point for the tendering procedure of the PPP project was the winning design by the Berlin architectural agency Richter Musikowski. The design reflects the urban environment, is extremely energy and climate friendly and offers one large room without walls. Two large glass walls on both sides open up the building, offering visitors a panoramic view over the city and the river. The public will also be able to access the roof or visit the restaurant and cafe.

The energy-efficient nature of the building includes solar, thermal and photovoltaic systems for power generation, plus storage of solar energy in batteries. Sustainability certification is being pursued to a level comparable to the gold standard of the German evaluation system for Sustainable Building (BNB).
