BuroHappold team’s ‘vertical forest’ design wins tower block contest

12 Nov 15 BuroHappold and Stefano Boeri Architetti have won the design competition for the Tour de Cedres residential tower in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The 117m-tall tower is conceived as a vertical forest with terraces and loggias. It will house more than 100 cedar trees together with shrubs and plants for an overall area of 3,000m2 of greenery. The scheme is completed by a 5,000m2 retail centre.

The tower will have to meet the strict energy requirements of the Swiss Minergie standard and so will be designed for optimal lighting, shading and thermal performance. It will also make extensive use of renewable technologies including photovoltaics, ground source heat pumps and rainwater collection.

The external loggias and planters for the vertical forest are being developed as a modular prefabricated elements, connected to the reinforced concrete frame of the tower.
