The development will include 700 new homes, new sports facilities, shops, a healthcare centre, a school and community facilities.  Plans for the 220 acre site were approved last week by councillors from Bath & North East Somerset Council.

Groundwork on the site will begin early 2014 followed swiftly by construction of the new Fry Club and the first phase of homes.

Consulting engineer WSP helped with the planning for Taylor Wimpey to reduce costs and make the best use of existing infrastructure.

WSP project manager Neil Brant said: “Somerdale has been a technically and politically challenging site from the outset requiring extensive input from WSP. There were multiple challenges to overcome, particularly meeting sustainability criteria at the same time as providing solutions that would meet the development’s needs.”
