Carillion ahead of target for BIM Level 2

15 Jan 14 Carillion says that it is set to reach Business Information Modelling (BIM) Level 2 compliance two years ahead of schedule.

The contractor is currently coordinating a number of pilot projects in both the public and private sectors.

In preparation for the introduction of mandatory BIM on all government funded projects from 2016, Carillion has been working to an effective BIM Level 1 standard (BS 1192:2007) for several years.  However, with Level 2 standards coming, the company has been involved in a number of projects that push BIM further.

Carillion explains that the difference with BIM Level 2 (PAS 1192:2:2013) is a requirement to federate graphical information (in the design) and non-graphical information (asset component Data and PDFs) into a common platform – the 3D model.  Each element of the 3D model holds information about that asset component, from programming (4D BIM), commercial (5D BIM) or lifecycle asset and operational data (6D BIM) and is shared in a collaborative common data environment for visibility to all.

“The ethos of BIM is very much aligned with Carillion's values and our 2020 sustainability strategy – in which we are building a sustainable BIM capability, offering the client and owner-operator an open, transparent and collaborative way of working to meet the government targets,” said Carillion’s BIM development manager Alex Lubbock.  “As an integrated process, BIM enables projects to be designed, constructed and maintained more efficiently and effectively enabling faster, better, cheaper and greener results.”
