Carillion barges Battersea spoil away

17 Mar 14 Main contractor Carillion has begun transporting excavated material from its Battersea Power Station contract by barge down the Thames to Essex.

Battersea Power Station Development Company is turning the old 39-acre power station site into housing. Carillion is the contractor for the first phase, Circus West.

Two barge loads are being moved each day and each barge has a maximum loading capacity of 1000-tonnes of spoil, the equivalent of 50 lorries. Using barges for spoil removal has reduced lorry movements to the site by 20%, says the developer.

Excavated material is being transported to Veolia in Rainham, Essex, for recycling or reuse in other construction projects.

The removal of excavated material by barge began last week and will continue until April.
