Having acquired Halcrow in 2011, the Americans now want another of the UK’s grandest consulting engineers, it seems.
An unsubstantiated report in The Times newspaper says that CH2M made the approach for Atkins at a senior level, suggesting a US$4bn merger.
The two companies have worked closely together on several projects, including Crossrail, HS2 and the A14 upgrade.
“It is our policy not to comment on rumour and speculation,” Atkins told Reuters news agency when asked.
