Challenging ground pushes up cost of Helsinki metro

27 Feb 14 Helsinki City Board has approved additional funding for the western metro extension based on a new, revised cost estimate.

The council is set to peg the city’s share of the new Länsimetro at €217.5m, representing an increase of €30.4m on top of the original project cost estimate.

The cost overrun is caused by extra excavation and reinforcement work due to more demanding ground conditions than estimated, as well as by extra costs for station construction. The maximum additional funding approved by the City Board includes a reserve of €13 million for possible cost increases and emergency shelters.

The current total cost estimate for the metro extension is €979m. Espoo and Helsinki cover the costs of construction in their areas, and the Finnish Government covers 30% the total costs.

West Metro is due to begin operation in autumn 2016.
