The US$6.15bn (£4bn) project is scheduled to take five years to complete.
The new line will reduce the travel time between Goldmud and Korla from 26 hours to 12 hours. Last week’s beginning of construction on the Qinghai part of the line follows the start of work on the Xingjiang section in mid-November.
The new line is seen as of great strategic significance as it there are abundant oil and mineral resources along the route.
