Chinese contractor confirmed for £700m Salford scheme

23 Oct 15 Beijing Construction Engineering Group (BCEG) has been named as main contractor for the £700m Middlewood Locks regeneration project in Manchester.

BCEG has also promised £4m development financing to help kickstart the project.

Middlewood Locks is a 24-acre brownfield site in Salford that was acquired by developer Scarborough Group earlier this year.  There is outline planning consent for a new mixed use community of around 2,000 new homes and up to 750,000 sq ft of commercial development space.

The first phase is expected to comprise the development of 550 homes and 29,000 sq ft of commercial space.

The deal was one of numerous Sino-British trade deals finalised to coincide with eh state visit to Britain this week of Chinese president Xi Jinping. Other deals confirmed included the appointment of CITIC, a major state owned Chinese investment group, as the main contractor for the Royal Albert Docks regeneration project and – as previously reported – China General Nuclear Corporation (CGN) taking a £6bn stake in Hinkley Point nuclear power station in return for clearance to build a Chinese-designed nuclear plant in Essex.

China Daily website has also reported that China Building Technique Group Co (CBTGC) has signed as primary contractor on the £500m Lansdowne Road project in Croydon, where there is planning permission to build the UK's tallest block of flats.

BCEG, the Middlewood Locks contractor, is also already involved in the joint venture behind the £800m Airport City development planned at Manchester Airport. According to US publication Engineering News Record, it is the 15th biggest contractor in China and ranked 44 in the world by turnover.
