A crew from Walter Thompson (Contractors) Ltd was laying concrete floor slabs – when a crowbar became trapped between two of slabs, one of the men was hit in the face.
Durham Crown Court heard how the incident happened when Walter Thompson was working as principal contractor on the 47-bedroom extension of Ramside Hall Hotel in Durham in December 2014.
A subsequent investigation by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) found that the contractor had failed to adequately plan and manage the installation of the two floor slabs.
Walter Thompson (Contractors) Limited, of Construction House, Northallerton, pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 22(1)(a) of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007 and was fined £33,000 with £12,552.81 costs.
