Costain JV studies offshore foundations
Funding has been secured for research on the design and construction of concrete gravity foundations for large offshore wind turbines.
Gravitas Offshore, a joint venture of Costain, Hochtief and Arup, has secured a £556,250 grant from the Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) and the Technology Strategy Board’s (TSB) Offshore Wind Components Technologies Scheme. The funding is expected to help demonstrate the benefits of the foundation technique. Concrete gravity foundations are expected to play a key part in delivering the next round in wind farm developments.
The Gravitas project is also expected to help develop standards for concrete offshore wind foundations.
Gravitas Offshore is also working towards the construction of a demonstrator foundation for deployment in UK waters within the next two years to optimise construction and installation.
