Called Breakthrough: Crossrail’s tunnelling story, the exhibition is designed give visitors an experience of London's hidden subterranean landscape.

Visitors will see the story of the tunnel construction and hear first-hand experiences of tunnelling engineers and construction workers.

London Transport Museum chief executive Sam Mullins said: ““The exhibition will give people an idea of what it’s like to build large tunnels under our busy streets. Children and adults can experience first-hand of how it feels to stand in a giant Crossrail tunnel by checking out our tunnel installation in our ‘Coming soon to London’ gallery space.”

The exhibition opens on 1st February 2015.

There will be a five-metre high, walk-through installation of a cross-section of a Crossrail tunnel to allow visitors to experience what it might be like to stand in a tunnel which is under construction deep underground. The tunnel will contain a computer simulation of a boring machine in action, like one being used to dig Crossrail’s tunnels.

The gift shop has even stocked up with Crossrail paraphernalia, including posters, crocheted moles and homeware moulded from Crossrail concrete which are inspired by Crossrail’s tunnelling achievements.

Crossrail chief executive Andrew Wolstenholme said: “Crossrail is among the most ambitious infrastructure projects undertaken in the UK. This fantastic exhibition is testament to the thousands of people who have worked tirelessly to help construct Crossrail this far. Crossrail will dramatically change how people travel across London and I hope the exhibition will give people a taste of the new tunnels and stations to come.”

The London Transport Museum is in Covent Garden. Entry is free for those under 18. Adult tickets are £16 (£11.50 concessions) and allow unlimited admission the Museum’s galleries and temporary exhibitions for 12 months.
