DfT reveals pothole data

24 Sep 15 The M6 is officially Britain’s worst motorway for pothole damage.

Data released by the Department for Transport following a freedom of information request reveals that over the past three years it has received 1,951 claims for compensation from motorists due to the poor state of its roads. Of these, 233 claims were generated by the M6.

However, it does seem to be improving. There were 111 damage claims relating to the M6 in 2012/13. This dropped off to 70 in 2013/14 and 52 in 2014/15.

The total number of claims received by the Department for Transport over the past three years was 1,951, with a combined value of £753,819. It paid out on 694 of them, costing it £189,628.
