EU sees civils work fall and building grow

20 Jan 16 Overall construction output in the EU rose in November compared to October, with growth in building work compensating for a fall in civil engineering.

Across the 28 countries of the EU (EU28), there was an increase of 0.7%, with building construction rising by 0.8%, while civil engineering fell by 0.8%.

In the 19 countries of the Eurozone, there was an increase of 0.8% in production in construction as building construction rose by 1.1% while civil engineering fell by 0.3%.

Among member states with data available, the highest increases were recorded in Slovenia (+15.5%), Hungary (+3.6%), Italy and Poland (both +2.9%), and the largest decreases in Slovakia (-4.9%) and the Czech Republic (-0.7%).

Comparison of November 2015 with the previous year shows that production in construction grew by 2.1% in the euro area and by 1.9% in the EU28.

Building construction rose by 2.7%, while civil engineering fell by 0.5% in the Eurozone. In the EU28, the increase of 1.9% is due to building construction rising by 2.0% and civil engineering by 1.5%.

The highest increases were recorded in Slovakia (+16.9%), Sweden (+10.7%), Romania (+6.8%) and Slovenia (+6.1%), and the largest decreases in Portugal (-4.5%) and Poland (-1.9%).
