Final gate installed for Panama Canal expansion

30 Apr 15 The expansion of the Panama Canal has reached a key milestone this week with the installation of the sixteenth and final gate for the new locks.

The final gate – which was installed on the Pacific side - is one of the heaviest and weighs 4,232t. It measures 57.6m wide by 10m long and 33m high.

The installation of all eight gates on the Atlantic side of the Panama Canal was completed 1 April.

The 16 new gates arrived in Panama from Italy in four staggered shipments starting in August 2013.

With the installation of the final gate in the Pacific, the electro-mechanical work can start. This involves connecting the gates with the other structures in the new locks.

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) said that the next milestone for the expanded canal will occur when the lock chambers are flooded.
