The £750m mixed-use development also includes a pair of office buildings alongside. The overall scheme is called The Stage, as it is on the 2.3-acre site of William Shakespeare’s Curtain Theatre, the remains of which were discovered in 2011.

Main construction works are expected to start in April 2016 with final build completion scheduled for the first quarter of 2019.

Galliard is promoting The Stage in joint venture with private equity firm Cain Hoy, US investor McCourt, Chinese developer Vanke and The Estate Office Shoreditch.

The masterplan is by architect Perkins & Will and interiors by Argent Design.

At the foot of the 37-storey apartment block off Curtain Road will be a new public square and 400,000 sqft of mixed use space including cafes, restaurants and shops. As well as the main tower, with 412 flats, there will be two office buildings and a leisure/performing arts pavilion. Under the plans, a railway viaduct on one side of the new square will be restored, with its old brick arches accommodating shops and bars.

Galliard Homes sales director David Galman said: “The regeneration of this Shakespearean site will elevate the status of Shoreditch to that of the uber-cool Meatpacking district in downtown New York City.” He also said the development would “turn Shoreditch into the new Notting Hill”.
