GMI bags £22m Sunderland warehouse project

GMI Construction has been appointed as main contractor by Barmston Developments for a new 422,000 sq ft distribution facility at Turbine Business Park in Sunderland for Vantec Europe.

The £22.5 million project will be the North East’s largest pre-sale warehouse building to be constructed this century.

Leeds-based GMI has already started work on site and the project will be completed by the end of the year.

The new Vantec Europe warehouse will handle around six million plastic and metal containers containing Nissan car parts each year which will be received from the UK and European supplier base.

Recent industrial projects delivered by GMI include a 450,000 sq ft production facility for Thorn Lighting in Spennymoor, a 700,000 sq ft distribution centre and offices for Tesco in Lichfield, and a 440,000 sq ft warehouse and offices for Poundstretcher in Huddersfield.
