Northern Ireland transport minister Michelle McIlveen said work would start later this year “on this strategically important route”.

A total of 14km of new dual carriageway will be constructed as part of the scheme. This will be in two sections: 7.3km from the end of the M22 at Randalstown to the Toome Bypass; and 6.7km from Toome Bypass to the Castledawson roundabout.

Graham Farrans JV was awarded the contract for the development of the project in May 2015, the first phase of which was to assist Transport Northern Ireland with completion of the design and get the scheme to ‘shovel ready’ stage.

Michelle McIlveen said: “That detailed design work is progressing and now that the executive has confirmed funding for this section of the A6, the scheme can move ahead with work on site expected to start by the end of the summer.”
