Granite team wins $279m Connecticut wastewater tunnel

26 Jul 16 A joint venture of Granite subsidiary Kenny Construction and Obayashi Corporation has won a US$279m (£212m) contract for the South Hartford Conveyance & Storage Tunnel (SHCST) in Hartford in the US state of Connecticut.

The joint venture team will be responsible for the construction of a 6.4km-long, 5.5m-diameter lined tunnel, about 10 shafts, seven adits and an odor-control building.

The SHCST will convey and store wastewater from portions of South Hartford and West Hartford, and minimise sewer overflows into the local Connecticut River and Long Island Sound during major storm events.

Funding for the project is provided by the Department of Energy & Environmental Protection Clean Water Fund. Construction is scheduled to begin next month for completion by autumn 2020.
