Helsinki explores feasibility of new underground line

13 Mar 14 A feasibility study is being carried out into a proposal for a new railway under Helsinki city centre.

Finland's parliament could take a decision on the scheme as early as this year.

The City Rail Loop, Pisararata, would be a commuter line under the city centre. The loop-shaped railway would start in Pasila and run in a tunnel via Töölö, Helsinki city centre, Hakaniemi and back to Pasila. It would put some of the Helsinki regional commuter trains onto their own, dedicated railway line.

No decision on the City Rail Loop has been made. The current feasibility study will form the basis for a decision whether or not to construct the rail line. The final decision by the Finnish Parliament coud be made this year at the earliest.

The Hakaniemi station would be the busiest on the loop, with a predicted 79,000 passengers per day in 2035. All three stations on the rail loop would be built into dense and busy urban environments.

A planning team is currently working on station logistics and accessibility, taking into consideration cyclists, who should be able to park their bikes safely or to carry then on board.
