India cancels £955m tunnel project

2 Mar 16 A major highway and tunnelling project in India has been cancelled shortly after the contractor had been appointed.

Winning bidder IRB Infrastructure Developers has been told by the client that the bid process and its letter of award issued in January have been cancelled. IRB said that no reasons had been given.

The scheme for the government’s Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MORT&H) involves approximately 14km of tunnel and 11km of approach road at a total project cost of Rs 9090 crore (£955m). The Zozila Tunnel involved the construction, operation and maintenance and the  approaches on NH-1 highway was on a design, build, finance, operate & transfer basis.
