International team named for €2.3bn Mecca Metro

6 Jul 15 A joint venture of Spanish, Turkish and Saudi companies has been named preferred bidder for the €2.3bn (£1.6bn) construction of lines B and C of the Mecca Metro in Saudi Arabia.

Isolux Corsan, Kolin İnşaat Turizm Sanayi ve Ticaret and Haif will now start official negotiations with the client and it is expected that the signature will be signed in the coming months.

The 11.9km Line B section of the contract involves the construction of three stations and Line C is 13km long and has six stations, including two major interchanges.

The scope of the contract includes tunnelling as well as the execution of stations and interchange stations and associated works. Tunnels are divided in the different sections according to different construction methods: 19,616m of mined tunnels, 8,740m of tunnels built by tunnel boring maching and 4,105m of cut and cover tunnels. The project also involves the execution of more than 1,175m of viaducts and substantial pedestrian underpasses.

In addition, there will be the demolition of existing structures and facilities, traffic control, road diversions, utilities relocations and other enabling works.
