L&T lands contract for major Qatar bypass

13 Mar 14 India’s Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has won its largest-ever international road project.

The QAR2.187bn (£361m) contract with Qatar’s public works authority, Ashghal, is for the design and construction of the Al Wakrah Bypass.

The scope of work involves construction of 11km of road, consisting of 10 lanes with provision for future expansion. The freeway will provide access to existing and planned developments via five major interchanges comprising 20 bridges, 13 bicycle overpasses, eight vehicular underpasses, three pedestrian bridges and 736 m of tunnel. The project is scheduled to be completed in 32 months.

L&T senior executive vice president SN Subrahmanyan said: “This is the company’s single largest road order in the international market and is an important turning point in our plans of growing the company’s business in the Middle East region.”
