Leadbitter to build Barry care block
Leadbitter has won a £7.2m contract to build an apartment block for older people in Barry, South Wales on behalf of Hafod Care Association.
The Golau Caredig project is designed by Cardiff-based architectural practice Pentan Partnership. It is being constructed on the site of Barry’s former cinema and will comprise 42 apartments over eight floors, with an atrium to provide natural light throughout.
The external iron columns and projector room shutters from the original cinema will be preserved and incorporated into the new building. The original New Theatre sign will also be saved.
Leadbitter’s West and Wales regional director Charlie Scherer said: “We are looking forward to working on this unusual development, which will bring much-needed extra care accommodation to the town of Barry.”
Extra care apartments are designed to enable older people to remain independent in their own homes for as long as possible, with care support on hand should they need it.
