Liebherr’s new supporting base system makes UK debut

13 Feb 14 Southern Cranes & Access Hire has bought the UK’s first Liebherr LTM 1130 5.1 crane featuring the the new Variable Supporting Base (VSB) technology.

Use of the base system increases the crane’s working radius. The LTM1130 5.1 crane has a working radius of 60m and a maximum lift capacity of 130t. The long variable boom and impressive lifting capacities are designed to provide flexibility and versatility for a range of lifting projects.

The VSB system measures the exact position and the support forces exerted on each individual outrigger. An on-board work planner then uses this data to plot the working duties of the crane based on the actual data, position, ballast and ground force of the crane. The moment limiter will stop the crane extending past the safe operation zone.

“The Variable Supporting Base makes the LTM1130 significantly more versatile; it increases the working radius of the crane in restrictive environments where out-riggers cannot be fully extended,“ said Southern Cranes & Access managing director Clive Sadler. “The use of the Variable Supporting Base leads to improved levels of safety during lifting operations; the crane operator will know exactly how much weight can be lifted in any given circumstance and offers us a greater flexibility to offer our customers the ability to plan lifts in previously difficult or dangerous environments.”
