Loan secured for Bangladesh’s first metro

25 Feb 13 The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed has signed agreements to provide Bangladesh with loans totalling up to a total of 70.693 billion yen (£489m) for assistance for three projects.

The projects include the 20.1km initial line of Bangladesh’s first urban mass rapid transit railway. Construction tenders are expected to be invited in September 2015, with the line due to open six years later.

Greater Dhaka is one of the world's largest cities at eighth in population with approximately 15 million people. Road infrastructure has not kept pace with the growing population and the number of vehicles and there is acute traffic congestion. It is estimated that the system will have about 510,000 users per day.
