McAlpine starts on the Sugar Cube
Sir Robert McAlpine has begun work on Manchester Metropolitan University’s new £110m campus for nursing and teaching students in Hulme.
The Birley Fields campus, to the south of the city centre, will be home to the Faculty of Health, Psychology and Social Care and the Faculty of Education. More than 6,000 students will study here.
The main academic building, designed by architect Sheppard Robson, has been dubbed the Sugar Cube. The contract also involves the design and construction of an energy centre and external works.
Sir Robert McAlpine won the contract for the £60m first phase on the back of its work on the university’s landmark Business School and Student Hub.
