Morocco gets funds for intercity rail upgrade

29 Jan 16 The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a US$112.3m (£78.5m) loan to Morocco for infrastructure improvements on a 142km stretch of the Tangier-Casablanca-Marrakech railway.

Moroccan National Railways Office (ONCF) will use the funding in dualling the line linking the cities of Settat and Marrakech. The work is designed to generate time savings and allow increased passenger and freight traffic between Casablanca - Morocco’s economic capital - and Marrakech, its main tourist centre. The annual passenger volume could increase from the current 4.5 million to more than 7.4 million in 2020, when works are due to be completed. Freight volumes could more than double.

More than eight million Moroccans live in the project’s area of influence. Improving the efficiency of rail transport contributes to the competitiveness of logistics and to poverty reduction in these areas, said AfDB.
