Mott designs new runway and concourse for Hong Kong airport

11 Mar 14 Mott MacDonald is designing the third runway, infrastructure and concourse at the Chek Lap Kok Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA).

The expansion, which is being carried out on behalf of the Hong Kong Airport Authority (HKAA), will allow 620,000 flight movements, enabling over 102 million passengers and approximately nine million tonnes of cargo to pass through the airport every year.

As lead consultant, Mott MacDonald is designing the scheme for the third passenger concourse and runway, which will be created on a reclamation platform north of the existing airport island. The work includes design of all associated taxiways, roads and tunnels, stormwater culverts and drainage, ancillary buildings and utility services, as well as airfield systems, fire services and cable ducting systems. The consultancy will also design automated people mover and baggage handling systems for the new concourse.

Mott MacDonald has been involved in the development of HKIA since the very beginning. The company is also leading the engineering feasibility and associated environmental impact assessment for the third runway system and the airport master plan 2030. Additionally, Mott MacDonald is currently working on the midfield concourse and various other associated infrastructure contracts at the airport.
