New chair for Ucatt

23 Jan 15 Construction union Ucatt has elected Neil Andrews as its new chair.

Neil Andrews, a joiner, is Ucatt’s executive council member for Wales and the southwest and the first Welshman ever to hold the post.

He succeeds Neil Vernon, who remains a member of the executive council representing the Midlands Region.

Mr Andrews has been a member of the executive council since 2001 and is employed by Tai Calon Community Housing in Blaenau Gwent.

Mr Andrews said: “It is an honour to be the first Welsh person to be chair of Ucatt. My priority will be to ensure that Ucatt continues to modernise and that we continue to adapt our union to meet the needs of construction workers in the 21st century. I look forward to working with the general secretary, and the new national secretary when they are appointed, in building our union.”

General secretary Steve Murphy said: “I would like to thank Neil Vernon for his sterling, dedicated and conscientious work as chair of the EC and look forward to working with Neil Andrews in the future.”
