Qatar awards contract for lagoon clean-up

26 Mar 15 Egis has won a contract for the rehabilitation of a large lagoon in the Al Rayyan region, west of Doha in Qatar.

Yhe Al Karaana lagoon covers more than 4km2 and is giving ruse to serious environmental problems. Almost 60,000m3 of untreated wastewater per day are discharged onto the site by tanker, most notably causing the contamination of the water table by infiltration, producing foul odours and creating safety risks connected with the transport of sewage.

The Public Works Authority of Qatar, Ashgal, has awarded Egis a 23-month engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) contract to rehabilitate this lagoon. The aim is to eradicate the lagoon and carry out a comprehensive overhaul of the site, in continuance of the measures taken to date to mitigate its environmental impact.

Teams from Egis will be tasked with identifying and qualifying the lagoon’s waters and sludge in order to evaluate the contamination of the water table and evacuate this waste to the appropriate treatment processes.

They will carry out the design of the wastewater treatment and the soil and water table decontamination, write the tender documentation, perform the design review of the plans and documents submitted by the selected contractor, and then supervise the works.
