Rail boss quits for National Grid

23 Mar 16 Nicola Shaw, the chief executive of High Speed 1 Ltd who recently delivered a government-sponsored study into future options for Network Rail, is leaving the transport industry to join National Grid.

Nicola Shaw has been appointed UK executive director of National Grid and is expected to move across in the summer.

She has been chief executive High Speed 1 Ltd, the operator of the rail line between London and the Channel Tunnel, since 2011. She led the transition from construction phase into a long-term business, managing and maintaining the high speed railway infrastructure and stations. Previously, she was a managing director of First Group’s European bus division.

Nicola Shaw was recently asked to report to the UK government on the future structure and financing of Network Rail. The Shaw Report was published on 16th March 2016.

National Grid chairman Sir Peter Gershon said: "The board is delighted to appoint Nicola Shaw to lead our UK business following John Pettigrew's appointment as CEO. Nicola has a strong track-record in leading important infrastructure businesses and in working with the UK government and regulators. Her broad experience makes her ideally placed to help National Grid deliver value for our customers today and into the future."
