Secrets of 2012 start to emerge

5 Mar 13 With the gag removed, suppliers to the London 2012 Olympics construction projects are now allowed to talk about their work.

With national security no longer under threat, it can finally be revealed that there is enough plastic pipe in the Olympic Park to stretch from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

Polypipe supplied almost one million metres of plastic pipe and more than two million fittings to the Olympic Park.

Only now can this be revealed.

Polypipe supplied its Terrain above ground soil and waste drainage systems to all of the major projects on the Park, plus numerous other systems such as water supply, pressure systems, under-floor heating and rainwater harvesting, while developing several innovative products for the project.

One innovation is Terrain Firetrap firesleeves, which – according to Polypipe – achieved a never-seen-before four-hour fire protection for above ground plastic drainage systems.

Polypipe won each project individually across the Olympic Park.

Polypipe Terrain technical director Ian Crickmore credits this success to integrated team working. He said: “By getting involved early with the project engineers and designers we were able to provide substantial technical assistance and guidance, helping the project teams overcome any challenges and find the best pipework solutions for their buildings. It was also a big help for us to get input into our research and development program. We became part of the integrated supply chains on these projects and the results speak for themselves.”

Commercial director Adam Turk said he was delighted to gag had come off. “Moreover, we are really pleased that we can now use the Olympic experience, together with our world-class technical competence, to work on other key high profile projects such as this around the world,” he said.
