Seven win places on £196m North Wales schools framework

31 Mar 14 Four local building companies are among seven contractors that have won places on a new schools framework covering North Wales.

The framework will be worth a total of £196m in the region over the next four to seven years and covers projects valued at over £4.35m.

All North Wales authorities or regional public sector bodies can choose a contractor from the list without having to go through lengthy procurement processes.

The companies selected are:

  • Kier Construction
  • Balfour Beatty - Frodsham
  • Miller Construction (UK)
  • Read Construction Holdings
  • Watkin Jones
  • C Wynne and Sons Ltd
  • Wilmott Dixon Construction.

The framework is a joint project funded by the Welsh government's Department for Education & Skills uner its 21st century schools programme and is led by Denbighshire and Flintshire County Councils, on behalf of the six North Wales local authorities.

Dr Mohammed Mehmet, chief executive of Denbighshire County Council said: "This framework aims to maximise the benefits of the projects to the local community and sustain economic development. The companies were selected following a competitive process and we are delighted to see four North Wales companies qualifying to be on the framework. We feel this is important for the local economy and to provide local firms to apply for local projects.

"The main driver for this project is to obtain value for money from public procurement and deliver community benefits across the region. Considerations will include training and employment targets, prompt payments of sub -contractors, opportunities for supported businesses. education, work experience, community initiatives and open opportunities for small medium enterprises.”
