Shenzhen unveils plan for vast metro expansion

6 Jan 17 The Chinese city of Shenzhen has said that it will have a 1,142km metro network by the end of 2030.

At present, Shenzhen Metro operates eight lines with a current length of 285km, with another 148.7km under construction.

The city's urban planning and land resources commission is seeking public input into the planned network expansion, which sets out metro system of 32 lines, including three new express routes taking the total to eight.

The plan is to support the city's development as a national economic centre and an international city. It is designed to ensure that local trips to the city's central business districts (CBDs) take no more than 45 minutes.

One of the new express lines will link Futian CBD with the Airport New Town area. Another will be built to enhance the connection between Longgang and Qianhai and the third will link Longhua with Futian.

The network is expected to serve 70% of commuters using public transport.
